Four Poems by Beirut 39er Ahmad Yamani

Youssef Rakha, over at Arabophile, has posted four poems by Ahmad Yamani—although it’s not clear where they’re from or who did the translating.

Nonetheless,  read them. I liked the jolt of some of the just slightly off kilter, simple lines, such as: “I opened the window and the evening was still there.”

You can read more about Yamani here, and eight poems from his The Utopia of Cemeteries are available in Beirut 39: New Writing from the Arab World.

  1. if anyone here can read Ukrainian – here is my Ukrainian translation of three Yamani’s poems http://bohdan-rachok.livejournal.com/58938.html
one of them is the Tobacco Seller

    • I read Russian, although I’m afraid that helps just enough to be dangerous.

But thanks for the link! I’m sure there are some Ukranian-readers around here…
